This week on the We Grow Ours show, Nick and Don have Craig from Lonesome Star Farm talking about his pigs! These “little” pigs are a great homesteaders choice! The KuneKune.. Craigs has a great reputation in this industry and is a breeder of these little piggy’s. Lonesome Star Farm’s kunekune pigs are pure-bred, registered, and DNA validated.
Thanks to Robyn Hutchison- Prescott Arizona for the referral – You can find Robyns KuneKune page here: http://www.minijersey.org/kunekune-pigs.html
This versatile pig can be a great family companion and content grass grazer. While good and true, rekindling their original purpose as a superior field worker/porker is our main purpose as well. Originally, the Maoris tribes in the South Pacific bred to the kunekune’s strengths as a domesticated field worker/porker. Today, their firm stature and muscular appearance lives on through AKBA breeders and farmers like ours.
Homesteaders and self-sufficient groups could fully utilize the kunekune’s worker/porker traits. They are the only pig that can fatten mostly on grass! The urban locavore is also looking for natural grass-fed whole hogs. This heritage breed lard pig provides a marbled main course that’s worthy of its growing acclaim, sustainable for both producer and fancier.
Lonesome Star Farm’s heritage livestock including Kunekune pigs are nearly 100% grass-fed, no antibiotics/hormones/ or chemical dewormers are used. They are completely free to roam in a proportionately sized pesticide-free pasture using crop rotation and other ways to support the Dependent Triangle. You can also find them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/LonesomeStarFarm
This truly sustainable kunekune pig, the only swine that can fatten mostly on grass alone, is too great a resource to limit them as pets alone. Here are a few books you may also enjoy:
