It all started with a coop and some chicks!
My family gave me a 4 hen coop and 4 Silkie chicks for my birthday last March. Since the chicks were to little to leave outside Don also gave me a chicken that his flock would not accept. I named her “Daffy” because she was raised by a duck who was killed by a bobcat.
This is a picture of the brooder I built for the chicks. I got the plans from a blog called “Fresh Eggs Daily”. I have since switched out the heat lamp for a Brinsea Eco-Glow brooder heater. I was always moving the heat lamp to get the right temp and worried about starting a fire. The new heater has worked great.
I have found it much more convenient to have 2 plastic containers. I can switch the chicks to the clean one quickly without worrying about them getting stressed or cold while I clean.
And, yes, I keep the brooder in my bathroom because it is the only room I have that has a door. They need to be locked away from my dogs and cat when I’m not home. My lab mix is fascinated with the babies.
This pic is of my 1st Silkie chicks.
The gray and tan chicks turned out to be a roosters. I lost one and the one in the back was not a Silkie but a mix. Not the best start but…
